Bio
As a composer, Wyatt Cannon studies the subtle manipulation of sound to create long-form narratives. Often these processes are inspired by extra-musical elements such as evolution or astronomy. His music is whimsical, eclectic, and curious, and speaks to our human urge to understand our place in the universe through the medium of music. Wyatt is currently pursuing a Master of Music in Computer Music Composition at Indiana University's Jacobs School of Music, studying with Dr. Chi Wang and Dr. John Gibson. He is a graduate of the University of the Pacific, where he studied with Dr. Andrew Conklin.
He has received a variety of accolades and awards, most recently being selected for the Pacific Bands Composer Commissioning Award in 2021, and Pacific Composition Award in 2023. Previously, in 2018, he won the San Francisco Contemporary Music Players' competition, SF Search, for his piece "Quicksilver". He also received the CSIC Victor Salvo Music Scholarship in 2017. He has attended festivals and master classes, including Fifth House Ensemble's Fresh Inc Festival in 2021, and the Valencia International Performance Academy & Festival in the summer of 2022.
One of his main goals is to create spaces for performers and composers to present their work. In 2024 he hosted a concert, Oracle of the Moon, which showcased pieces by emerging composers, featuring local performers Jill Vangee and Jonah Cabral. As Education and Outreach Coordinator for 28/78 New Music Ensemble, he collaborated with ensemble members to create a call for scores, plan a concert featured on The Arc Project New Music's 2021 Online Festival, and create a variety of outreach events. Other collaborations include Earplay, Friction Quartet, ~Nois saxophone quartet.
